Mazda3 5-door vs CX-5
Focus 5-door vs Escape
Golf vs Tiguan
Impreza vs Forester
etc.
What do you sacrifice by getting the hatchback versus the crossover? AWD option, a few inches of ride height, and a bit of interior space maybe. In return, you get to save thousands on the purchase price, gain at least 5 MPG, and you end up with a far more drivable car.
Is there anything I'm missing? Build quality? Safety? Residual value?

High seating sells cars all by itself.

Crossovers are just in fashion at the moment, it's not a logical decision to take the crossover version of a car in most cases.

Sad, but true.

Don;t forget about the non-CX 5 :) Exact same suspension as the 3, same aftermarket support, but with seating for 6

Interior space comparison would kill this argument pretty quick. The Focus has than 23 cubic feet less than the Escape. The Impreza and Forester is a similar story with the Forester being up more than 22 cubic feet. I'd also bet resale value is way better on Crossovers. People like the high seating position that much.

I have both. A 2010 Mazda3 5-door and a 2014 CX-5. If my CX-5 had the newer skyactive 2.5l and not the wheezy 2.0l I would have to go with the CX-5. I like the higher seating position and the driving dynamics are almost the same. My wife averages 26 mpg (all city) in the CX-5 and I get 26.5 (mixed 50/50) in the 3.

Interesting. I've only driven the Focus vs Escape and the Escape drove nicely for a crossover . The CX-5 has such an impressive reputation that I'll have to try it eventually.

We got a CX-5 because my wife enjoys that high seating position. I didn't argue because it drives and pretty much looks like a car anyway. Gets amazing MPGs too. I call it a cute-ute. It's just a car on stilts.
